My new favorite bullion coin!

1 Attachment(s)
I would have posted this in the fav bullion coin section, but there are not any pics.

What a sucky thread, people taking about gold and silver and no pics.:confused_m:

So I started my own.

My new favorite coin is the Silver Mexican Libertad. Not because of beauty, as there are more beautiful bullion coins out there, the NZ Kiwi or Aussie Lunars come to mind, but because of its dimensions.

To me, psychologically, it feels like money. The coin is smaller than a standard US silver dollar and much smaller in diameter than a SAE (see dimension below) while being thicker and it is slightly heavier. It fits easier in my hand, and when you carry 3 or 4 not as clunky as the SAE. What, you don't carry around 3-4 silver coins in your pocket, too? :D

If I were to spend a silver coin, I would spend the Lib even though the silver content is the same as any other silver bullion coin.

If you have not held one, I do not know how to explain it to you. It just feels how a silver coin should feel.
Libertad SAE
Dimension: 1 ounce Dimension: 1 ounce
Weight (g): 31.635 Weight (g): 31.10
Diameter (mm): Cannot find Diameter (mm): 40.59

Now you can tell what an idiot I am.

No those were from another batch I ordered. They were all dated 1982, and it BU condition, except the boobs were scuffed. Had I known what you had, I would have ordered all 5 rolls.

No thanks, J-son. My remaining funds are earmarked for the GIM rounds. In the future, I will keep you in mind.

For those who are interested, J-son is an honest seller, great communicator and quick shipper. Could not ask for better than him.

Ooops, this thread will now get moved into the PM dealer forum. :coolbeer:

I actually love the Libertads as well. I prefer the newer series (2000-2007). The mid-years (198x-1991) are nice too, they are smaller in diameter and thicker, and they have incuse lettering on the rim, which is cool. But the newer ones are gorgeous coins, probably prettier even that the SAE and rivaling the Aussie Lunars, especially in proof. The reverse of the newer coins (2000 and later) is, IMHO, gorgeous. The earlier series (1991-1999) has the same pretty obverse as the newer coins, but the reverse is different.

Nice picture Ross, no way you did that with a scanner.

BTW, the breast augmentation came out well, maybe she is ready to play at the Gold Club.

I have recently fallen for these coins also. I have yet to get one of the newer designs but I have been picking them up as much as possible. Gave one to the father in law because he got the LIBERTAD bug also.

I'm amazed because I don't see how a scanner can highlight like that scan did. I thought it would just uniformly burn the whole image and "flatten" the detail. Do you have any control or do you put the coin on the platten and hope for the best?

I've got photoshop and an Epson scanner and the scanner drops the images right into photoshop. I assume that you do something similar.

But, in the end, a camera gives you so much control.

Just go into Photoshop and select "file", "import", and select the scanner from the list. I usually don't play with the scanner controls. Sometime I use the contrast control but that's about it. Scan at 600DPI and reduce to 200 or 150.

The older Onzas. I do not have any newer ones, but I suspect they are larger (similar in size to SAEs). I'm sure a GIMer can confirm.

I have to vote for those early 80's to mid 90's libertads too. There is just something about them that really says "cool". I'd like to have a treasure chest filled with them.

I bought 3 of the 5 rolls J-son had for sale, and can't wait to get them.

Re: My new favorite bullion coin!

The newer Libertads are either identical or very very close in size to the SAEs. They look identical, but I haven't measured.

I BELIEVE the 198x-1991 coins are called "Onzas" and the 1991-present coins are called "Libertads," but I've seen both. The older coins have the word "Onza" prominently on them, but they also have the word "Libertad" incuse printed on the edge. And I don't know what the 1978-1980 sterling coins were called. Unfortunately, I've seen people call both groups of coins both different names, so if you want to be sure, you should ask for the year and check out which design it is.

The 78-80 sterling coins, with the scale and press, are typically referred to as "onzas", whereas the ones with the angel are called "libertads". The older libertads are smaller in diameter and thicker than the newer ones, which are the size of SAEs. The onzas are just a tad bigger than SAEs, and are a pain in the butt to find suitable tubes for storage! I keep 'em in pog containers!

Yeah, the old (1978-1980) sterling coins are just a bit too big (42mm) to fit in SAE airtites or tubes. The pog container idea is cool!

The mid-year (1982-1995) coins are much smaller and thicker (36mm), and have the cool edge lettering.

The newer coins (1996-1999) have the new, gorgeous angel on the front, and are SAE size (40mm). The newest coins (2000-present) have the same obverse, but an even cooler reverse, in my opinion. They are the same size (40mm).

I am lucky enough to have one of each type of coin. I love them! :yippee:

Again, I've seen all 4 types of coins called both "Onzas" and "Libertads," so be careful when ordering, although all have 1 oz of pure silver. Here's a site with some good info and nice pics (I've never ordered from them, so it's not a recommendation of where to buy, just some info and pics). (Note that they call them ALL "Onzas.")

+1 on that Great Ag, the older Onzas have a tremendous old school, rugged, pirate-like appeal. That splendid thickness and smaller diameter is a large part of that allure. And the best thing is, you can frequently find them at little premium over spot.

That is probably my favorite silver bullion coin as well, the older Onzas with the writing on the edge. It's the smaller diameter and thickness that does it for me, too. The writing on the edge also attracts me. I only have two that I received as a birthday gift :bear_thumb: but they are still my favorite silver coins that I have.

The opposite is probably one reason that I don't like SAEs as much... too friggin' wide. Like big saucers. That and the weird dull milky finish they have.

That would be great! Jennifer (Lone Star Silver) sometimes has Libertads; just ask. APMEX had onzas for awhile at 45 over spot, but seem to be out of them at the moment. eBay on both Libertads and onzas is usually ridiculous -- the premiums I see people paying for these make me laugh! $20+ per coin? Please! A while back there was a guy trying to sell a roll of Libertads (20) with a starting bid of $550!

J-son's prices are very fair, but he is out.

The onza pic I posted, I purchased from coloradogold.com. He sells them for .75 cents over spot. NOt a bad price, but you have to buy 100 ounces minimum.

The gold Libertads are definitely nice, but I hardly ever see them. I've actually never seen one in person. When I do see them for sale (online), they seem to have huge premiums (the silver ones often do as well). If I could find the gold ones (full or fractional) for close to spot or at least Gold Eagle prices, I'd pick up a few.

That's a nice one, Jason. Looks just like the older silver "onzas", quite sharp. The gold 50 peso is still my favorite Mexican coin, though.:bear_happy:

Re: My new favorite bullion coin!

Libertads are my favorite silver coin and I give them away to interest people in silver because they feel so nice to hold and look so nice.

A few times I have handed someone a round and a Libertad and let them choose. It is never pondered. They want the Libertad though some say 'oh, I can't accept this' because Libertads feel like their real value rather than the ridiculously cheap price we can get them for in FRNs right now, and something deep in people recognizes this fact. The feel like I am handing them more like a $100 bill not a $10 bill, and feel bad about accepting.

I try to buy them when premiums are not too high as it seems to fluctuate.

I have not even seen pics of gold Libertads. Oh no... another much more expensive coin to lust after!

In gold I got one of the 1 ounce or near representatives that are commonplace - krug, austrian, mexican, eagle and maple. I got my big holding in eagles because I bought before I knew better.

My silver is mostly 90% and rounds (to get more ounces per FRN), but I have a few Libertads, and check each time I order silver to see if any year is at a reasonable premium.

Now I want 1 buffalo and probably each size of gold libertad (sigh) and my budget is busy with preps and if I had extra, getting shares cheap while the getting is good.
